From Dr. John Phillips:
I had the opportunity to once again return to South Sudan with Samaritan’s Purse Cleft Lip team. As you know South Sudan is the newest nation in the world having achieved independence after decades of Civil War. The country is extremely poor and access to healthcare is limited. Our mission was to bring children from remote areas of South Sudan to the capital Juba. The vast majority of the roads are not navigable so Samaritans Purse missionary pilots flying single prop planes or DC-8s bring them to the facility that we borrow from the government. Children with cleft deformities in East Africa carry a great stigma. There are many tribal beliefs that are still held to this day in South Sudan and when a child is born with cleft deformity the children are often left to die. Those not abandoned are hidden from people in the village. Some are sent out to the village to become shepherds or “sheep keepers“ and that way they never have to live in the village.
Children usually arrive with a single parent or a caretaker. They are taught that their deformity is not a curse or punishment from God rather they are taught that God loves them and the team can restore their smile. During their brief stay the good news of Jesus Christ is shared. Hymns are song in Arabic, Dinka and Nuer. The Jesus film is shown in the hospital ward in both Arabic and tribal languages .
Due to the stigma associated with a child being born with a cleft lip deformities many marriages or strained and torn apart. This not only damages the family interpersonally but when marriages break apart also creates extreme financial stress in a country that is ridden with poverty. Restoring these children’s smiles allows these children a second chance. It allows them to return to their families and villages. This past trip were able to perform 78 cleft surgeries. It was a privilege to be part of what God is doing in South Sudan.
Dr. Mark Wilson, Professor of Religion at Southern Wesleyan University, brought a 17th Century Ashkenazi Torah Scroll (from Germany). This Hebrew scroll of the Pentateuch (Genesis through Deuteronomy), written by a scribe in the late 1600’s, somehow survived the Nazi Holocaust and made its way to a Torah Scroll Repository in Jerusalem. A friend purchased the scroll and donated it to Southern Wesleyan University.

Recipes for Life
Every recipe has a list of ingredients. You can change a few here and there to adjust to taste, but you can’t change the basic ingredients or you will be creating something totally different. You won’t have the dish you intended to make. If your intent is to make an apple pie, you better have some apples on hand! So it is with Life. If you want to make it a healthy one in every way, you need some basic ingredients. You are what you eat, do, read, and think about. You really do become like the things and people you surround yourself with. You create daily the recipes that will become your life from all the ingredients you gather. I hope over the coming months you will enjoy trying some of my recipes along with my stories of how they were collected.
Exercise your Physical, Mental and Spiritual muscles: Physical goals are certainly worthwhile and I’m sure most of could benefit from having a better diet and exercise program. Now is the time to start eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly!
Mental Muscles – Most of us know that it is a scientific fact that exercising increases the blood flow to the brain making it healthier by creating new brain cells. But did you know if you add doing something mentally stimulating right after exercising, you will keep more of those new cells as well as rev up those old cells around them?! Plan some activities this year that will mentally stimulate you. Learn a new dance step, study a new language, read a book that makes you think, try a new recipe, do a puzzle. There are many possibilities, pick some that interest you. Work those mental muscles! Actually USING your brain keeps it working properly.
Spiritual Muscles – No matter where you are in your spiritual journey, if you are not growing stronger, you are growing weaker. It is impossible to stand still. This is a principle of physical, mental, AND spiritual life. Find ways to let God’s light shine on you to help you grow. All you have to do is ask Him – He will send people and situations to help you. Some examples: take the time to listen to spiritual teachers. Read books that have helped others on their spiritual journey. Buy and read a “study” Bible. Pray. The result of living in God’s light, much like a plant that receives the right amount of sun, will be a healthier life. We become more loving, kind, generous, happy, fun, patient, less critical, and less angry when God’s light is shining on us and through us. Applying God’s word to your life will help you grow. Happy New Year! May this year bring you all kinds of stronger, healthier muscles!
